Galatians 1:6-9
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
What were your key takeaways from our study in Galatians 1:6-9 on Sunday?
What words or ideas are repeated in Galatians 1:6-9? What is the general problem and main point Paul is trying to address?
The language Paul uses indicates that the Galatians are attempting to put away or put down one thing and pick up another. Based on Acts 13:38-39, Galatians 1:4, 6, 2:16, and 3:11, what is the gospel that Paul preached to the Galatians initially, and that they are so quickly setting aside? How does Galatians 1:1 give us confidence that what Paul proclaims is the true gospel?
What is the different, distorted gospel the Galatians are turning to based on Acts 15:1, Galatians 2:16, 3:2-3, and 5:2? What are some ways we try to add to the work of Jesus to make ourselves acceptable to God?
What are the implications for Jesus’ work when we try to add something to it? What are some of the downstream consequences in our own lives when we try to add to Jesus’ work?
After hearing the message of the Judaizers and the gospel Paul proclaimed, Peter said that salvation by works of the law puts God to the test and adds a burdensome yoke to our necks that we cannot bear (cf. Acts 15:10-11). Why do you think salvation by our performance is described that way?
Why is any change or addition to the gospel of Jesus Christ not good news? In contrast to the message of the Judaizers, what does the message of the gospel offer (cf. Gal 5:1, 4:4-7)?
Why is received righteousness better than earned righteousness? What attitudes do they each produce toward God? What attitudes and actions do they produce toward others?
If the Bible teaches us that we cannot earn our righteousness, but it is given to us graciously by God in Jesus, why do you think we have such a tendency to drift away from the gospel and slip back into earning /paying for God’s grace?
What warning exists for us in this text?
How can we live this week as though there truly is no other gospel? What gets in the way?
How can we remind one another of the true gospel and all of its power and benefits?
What do you have to be thankful for as a result of studying this text?
