Galatians 1:6-9

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What is one thing from the passage or sermon you have been wrestling with or chewing on since this Sunday?

  2. Paul is not offended personally by the Galatians’ abandonment; he says he is in wonder at how quickly they’ve deserted CHRIST. What does this say about his anger/ jealousy?

  3. Why do you think we tend to place a higher value on moral sin than doctrinal sin?

    1. -Noting here that there is, of course, a sense of triage with doctrine (cf. Finding the Right Hills to Die Onby Ortlund). The same could be said of moral sin as well.

  4. If the false gospel Paul is addressing can be summarized as faith + works = justification, how would you formulate the true gospel in similar terms?

  5. In what moments or areas of your life do you catch yourself believing (feeling, thinking, living with a perspective from…) a false gospel?

    1. What is that false gospel?

    2. How does the true gospel respond in Christ?

  6. “Anathema” (ἀνάθεμα) is the word here often translated as “accursed” in verse 8—meaning cut off, destroyed, damned. Why do you think Paul uses such strong language here (softer than even his rebuke of the Corinthians)?

  7. What is the best way of forming a response to false gospels in our world today that are believed by:

    1. -Unbelievers?

    2. -Other believers (online/at a distance)?

    3. -Fellow church members/believers?

    4. -In our families?

    5. -In ourselves?
