Galatians 1:1-5
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Have you ever read or studied the book of Galatians before? What did you find helpful? What questions did you have? What excites or intrigues you about going forward in this study?
What is your initial reaction to reading Galatians 1:1-5?
How does Paul’s introduction in Galatians differ from other letters he wrote (eg, 1 Cor 1:1-9, Eph 1:1-2 and 15-16, Col 1:1-5, Phil 1:1-6)? What seems to be Paul’s mood or tone as he begins his letter to the Galatians? What do his mood and tone communicate about the subject of Galatians?
In the broad sense, the word apostle means sent one or messenger. But what is Paul declaring by calling himself an apostle (cf. Acts 9:15-16, 1 Cor 15:7-11, 2 Cor 1:1, Eph 1:1, Col 1:1, 2 Tim 1:1)? What contrast does Paul make in Galatians 1:1, and why is that important to see and keep in mind?
How is Paul’s calling and commission different than ministers today (cf. Luke 6:12-13, Matt 10:1-7, Acts 1:2-3)
If Paul saw Jesus visibly, was instructed and commissioned by Jesus directly, and speaks with Jesus’ authority, what does that mean about the message he proclaims (cf. Gal 1:11-12, 16-17, 19-20, 2:1-2, 6, 7-9)?
If Paul’s role, message, and authority all come directly from Jesus, what does that mean for us as we read Paul's letters and he explains the gospel? What does Peter say about Paul’s writing and call his instruction in 2 Peter 3:16?
How would you summarize the gospel if someone asked you to explain it? How would you summarize the gospel from what Paul says in Galatians 1:4? What elements are present in his explanation and definition? Why are they each important? How are they life-giving, hope-filled, and much needed (cf. Gal 1:4 and 5:1)?
How would you summarize the message of the Judaizers according to Galatians 1:7, 2:4, 2:15-16, and 3:10? What does their message lead to and result in?
Define legalism and explain how it undermines the gospel (cf. Gal 2:21)?
What have you learned from studying Galatians 1:1-5? In what ways were you encouraged?
What is one thing you will take away and apply this week from our study?
