DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. [REFLECTION] How did this passage land for you this week? What do you remember thinking or feeling while going through it?

2. [IDOLATRY] “Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food” is an interesting quote Paul responds to here and indirectly in Philippians as well (Ph 3:18-19). How can the relationship between food and the stomach be corrupted and idolized?

- How does Paul connect this “stomach desire” to our desire for intimacy? Where does he say our desire for intimacy is ultimately satisfied?

3. [UNION WITH CHRIST] How ought being a member (appendage/limb) of Christ change the way we view our lives and actions?

4. [IDENTITY] What are different facets of the core identity of a Christian that pop up in this passage?

5. [SEXUAL SIN] How is sexual sin different from other sins? Don’t just read verse 18; what does it mean? (Hint: it’s not morally “worse” or “more evil”).

6. [FREEDOM] In v.12, Paul says, “I will not be dominated by anything...” but in verse 19b-20, he says, “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” In that context, what ,then, is freedom?

7. [LANGUAGE] What imperatives are in this passage? How do Paul’s indicatives (fact statements) lend care and clarity to what he is telling the Corinthians to do?
