1 Corinthians 4:6-21
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion Questions:
1.[REFLECTION] What stuck out to you from this week’s passage/sermon?
2.[HUMILITY] What does Paul mean by saying he has “applied all these things to
[himself] and Apollos…
”? What are “these things?”
3.[COMMUNICATION] How do we see the need for truth and love together in this
passage? What do we learn about Christian communication through Paul’s
multiple styles/attitudes?
4.[EVALUATION] Verse 7 is a great set of questions that are not necessarily
rhetorical. They are a great way to take inventory of our hearts. Paraphrase:
“Who made you so special? What do you have that hasn’t been given to you?
Why do you boast?”
-How do these questions challenge both our insecurities and our pride?
5.[CONTRAST] Verse 10-13 are contrasting the apostles from the Corinthians, and
in this contrast, we see a beautiful and harsh image of what it looked like for
Paul and the other apostles to live the Christian life. How does this depiction of
following Jesus contrast from what the Corinthians were expecting? How are
we tempted today to the same prideful “Christian” life Paul depicted in v.8-9?
6.[CORRECTION] How do you hear Paul’s turn in verse 14? How does this section
of 14-21 soften the sarcasm that came prior without softening the need for a
response?
7.[ESCHATOLOGY] Do you think verse 19-21 has any import on how we look
forward to the return of Christ? Why/why not?
