DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

What are the surprising differences between Ishmael’s birth (Gen 16:1-4) and Isaac’s birth (Gen 21:1-13), and how do those stories illustrate the two ways of relating to God that Paul contrasts in Galatians (e.g., Gal 4:23)?

Based on Galatians 4:21-27, what are the results of trying to relate to God through the law versus through grace?

What did God promise Abraham in Genesis 12:1–3, 13:14-15, and 15:1-5, and how did Abraham and Sarah take matters into their own hands in Genesis 16:1–4?

When are you tempted to “help God out” and take matters into your own hands, and what can we learn from Abraham and Sarah’s example and Paul’s instruction?

What are some modern-day “Ishmaels” we create—ways we rely on our own plans or performance instead of trusting God?

In addition to salvation by grace through faith, are there any practical areas of your life right now where God is calling you to wait on Him and trust His promise instead of your own effort?

Can you recall a time when you experienced the difference between the tiresome slavery of self-effort and joy-filled freedom of trusting God’s grace? How did that shape your faith?

What would it look like this week to rest in God’s grace instead of striving in your own strength?
