Jonah 4:1-11
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
According to Jonah 4:1–3, why is Jonah angry at God, and what does that reveal about his understanding of grace?
Pause and reflect on Jonah's attitude, words, and actions throughout chapter 4. Jonah would rather die than see Nineveh spared, while Jesus willingly died so sinners could be spared. What does this contrast reveal about Jonah's heart, the heart of Jesus, and the nature of God's grace? In what ways can we find traces of Jonah's attitude in our own hearts?
Jonah is "exceedingly angry" when God shows mercy to Nineveh but "exceedingly glad" when God provides a plant for his comfort (Jonah 4:6). What does this reveal about Jonah's priorities and affections? What modern-day "plants" are we tempted to care about more than people, God's kingdom, or the advance of the gospel?
Throughout the book, God uses the merciful affliction of a storm, a fish, a plant, a worm, and a scorching wind. Why is God afflicting Jonah according to Jonah 4:6 (note how discomfort is translated in the footnote)? Why is God’s affliction good and loving (cf. Psalm 119:71 and 75)?
Throughout the book, God uses storms, fish, plants, worms, scorching winds, and probing questions to confront Jonah's heart. What do God's afflictions and questions reveal about His character? How have you experienced God using difficulty, disappointment, or conviction to expose and transform your own heart?
Jonah gladly received God's mercy for himself but resented God's mercy toward Nineveh. Why is it often easier to receive grace than to extend it? Who are the "Ninevites" in your life—the people you find difficult to love, forgive, serve, or see receive God's grace? What makes extending mercy to them so difficult?
The book ends with a question and no recorded response from Jonah. Why do you think God chose to end the story this way? What response do you think Jonah should have given? More importantly, how would you answer God's final question if He asked it of you today?
After studying Jonah, what has most challenged or encouraged you about God's character? Is there any area where your heart is more like Jonah's than God's, and what would repentance and renewed faith look like this week?
