Jonah 2:1-10
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. When most people think about Jonah, they focus on the great fish. Yet only a few verses mention the
fish itself (Jonah 1:17; 2:1, 10). Why do you think we often focus more on the miracle than on Jonah’s
heart or God’s grace?
2. What stands out to you about Jonah’s prayer in chapter 2, and why?
3. In Jonah, physical location often reflects spiritual condition. How does Jonah’s descent into the deep
mirror what is happening in his heart spiritually?
4. At the very bottom, Jonah finally cries out to the Lord (vs 2). Why do we often wait until we reach the
end of ourselves before we truly seek God?
5. Jonah recognizes that God was pursuing him even through discipline and suffering (vs 3). Have you ever
experienced a season where you later realized God was using hardship to wake you up, redirect you, or
deepen your dependence on Him? What did you learn about yourself and God in that season?
6. Jonah’s prayer is filled with Scripture and echoes many of the Psalms (Ps 16:19, 18:4-6, 42:3-11,
130:1-3). What does that teach us about the importance of hiding God’s Word in our hearts before we
enter difficult seasons?
7. Under the weight of his rebellion, Jonah feels overwhelmed and as good as dead (vss 4-6). What does
sin and running from God often do to us emotionally, spiritually, and relationally (cf. Ps 32:3-4)?
8. What does Jonah do and what hope does he cling to according to verses 7-9? What hope and comfort
do we have regarding our prayers and why?
9. What is the “sign” of Jonah that Jesus says he will give in Matthew 12:38-42? What connections do you
see between Jonah’s experience and Jesus’ death and resurrection? Why do you think Jesus points
people to this sign?
10. What part of Jonah 2 do you most relate to personally right now—Jonah’s running, his desperation, his
prayer, God’s discipline, or God’s rescue—and why?
