Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8

ECCLESIASTES STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What stood out to you from our study of Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8 and why?

  2. In Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8, the Professor urges us to make the most of the life and gifts God has given, encouraging us to remember God and rejoice in his blessings, whether young or old. In Ecclesiastes 12:3-7, Solomon describes the state of our hands, shoulders, teeth, eyes, ears, sleep, attitude, desires, and reactions as we age. He reminds us that the days are coming when things won’t work the way they used to, when our bodies will break down, and we will return to dust. Why does the Professor want us to consider the weight of that reality? What does aging and decay teach us about ourselves?

  3. How does Solomon use the inevitability of aging and death to motivate those who are young to turn to God and serve him? Why do those who are young often put off dealing with spiritual matters? What do those who are young think they have plenty of? What does age and wisdom tell us, however?

  4. Young doesn’t simply refer to children or adolescents. It can also refer to what we might call our “productive working years.” During those years, we often say we don’t have enough time or time for that (i.e., family, serving, missions, discipleship, spiritual leadership). How might Solomon argue against that?

  5. When does Solomon want us to remember God and rejoice in his blessings, according to Ecclesiastes 11:8-9 and 12:1? Is it only when we are young? Is it only after we’ve lived a full life?

  6. Why do we need the reminders, encouragement, and reality of these verses?

  7. Though we tire, age, and decay, what do we learn about God and our savior Jesus in Isaiah 40:28-31, Psalm 90:2-4, Psalm 102:25-27, Psalm 121:3-4, and Hebrews 1:8-12, and 13:8? What hope, help, and encouragement does this offer (cf. Psalm 102:28)?

  8. What is one key takeaway from our study in Ecclesiastes 11:7-12:8 that you will try to remember and apply this week?
