Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

ECCLESIASTES STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What part of Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 caught your attention this week and why? How do these verses help you?

  2. According to 1 Kings 9:26-28 and 10:22-23 King Solomon sent out ships full of grain in multiple directions to trade and bring back riches and resources. How does that context help us better understand Ecclesiastes 11:1-2?

  3. Ecclesiastes 11:1 and 6 encourage us to act decisively while we can with the resources God has provided. Verse 2 goes further, encouraging us not only to act but to act wisely. Why are these two nuggets of wisdom so important? Why is it so important to hold them tightly together?

  4. In Ecclesiastes 11:3-5, the Professor encourages us to live wisely by faith. How does it make you feel that life is uncontrollable and unpredictable? What are some of the possible ways we might respond to that reality? How does Solomon’s wisdom stand in contrast?

  5. Sandwiched between the imperatives to act wisely in verses 1 and 6 are four statements, “you do not know.” What does Solomon remind us about ourselves with these statements, and why is it so important for us to remember?

  6. In contrast to our knowledge, what do the following verses teach us about God, and how do they give comfort and hope (Job 37:16, Ps 139:1-2, 4, & 16, Is 55:9, Matt 6:8, 1 John 3:20)?

  7. How do Ephesians 5:15-17 and James 4:13-15 provide equivalent New Testament wisdom to these verses in Ecclesiastes 11:1-6?

  8. How might God be challenging, confronting, or calling you to change in these verses we’re studying? How does the wisdom we read in these verses encourage and help you?

  9. What is one key takeaway from our study in Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 that you will try to remember and apply this week?
