Ecclesiastes 8:10-9:6

ECCLESIASTES STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What part of Ecclesiastes 8:10-9:6 stood out to you this week? Why did it catch your attention?

  2. In Ecclesiastes 8:10–11, 14, and 9:1-3, The Professor talks about injustice, delayed justice, and unfairness. Why does justice and fairness matter so much to us?

  3. What conclusions does The Professor preach to himself and to us in Ecclesiastes 8:12-13? Why is that truth so important for us to remember and hold on to, along with Ecclesiastes 3:17 and 12:13-14?

  4. What are we encouraged to do in Proverbs 3:5-7 at all times, but especially when we can’t make sense out of life? What does it look like practically for you to “trust in the Lord” and lean not on your own understanding?

  5. What do we learn about the wisdom and timing of God from these verses: Isaiah 40:28, Ps 147:5, Rom 11:33, Deut 29:29?

  6. What are your go-to resources when you don’t know what to do in a situation? What are we offered and invited to do in James 1:5? How much wisdom does God provide (cf. James 1:5, Col 2:16)?

  7. Have you ever felt like Paul did in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9a? Why is verse 9b so surprising, and how does it reshape our view of God, ourselves, and our circumstances?

  8. What is the context of Paul’s statement in Romans 12:19, and why do you think he has to make this statement? Is it hard for you to leave room for God to work? Why or why not? What do we learn about waiting on God from Psalm 27:14 and Lamentations 3:25-26?

  9. Jesus will return and he will judge the living and the dead (cf. Num 14:18, Heb 9:27, 2 Tim 4:1, Acts 10:42, 17:31, John 5:22, 27, 2 Cor 5:10). How does Jesus’ return and ultimate judgment on sin give us hope and help here and now?

  10. While the Professor points out another injustice in Ecclesiastes 8:14, how does this verse also point us forward to the good news about Jesus (cf. Mark 15:6-15, 2 Cor 5:20)?

  11. What is one key takeaway from our study in Ecclesiastes 8:10-9:6 that you will try to remember and apply this week?
