Ecclesiastes 8:1-9

ECCLESIASTES STUDY DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What part of Ecclesiastes 8:1-9 stood out to you this week? Why did it catch your attention?

  2. Why do you think true Godly wisdom has the power to change a person's demeanor and disposition (cf. Ecc 8:1)?

  3. We all live under some type of authority, whether parents, teachers, bosses, or government leaders. What does the Professor urge us to do regardless of the authority we are under (cf. Ecc 8:2-9)? Does that wisdom change if we are dealing with unwise, under-the-sun leaders who abuse their power and authority?

  4. How does the world typically navigate the inconsistency and injustice of those in authority? Have you ever seen this in action?

  5. What is your key takeaway from Romans 13:1-7 for how we are to view and deal with earthly authorities? What further wisdom do 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Titus 3:1-3, and 1 Peter 2:13-17 provide for how we are to respond to ruling authorities? How do we reconcile all of those verses with Peter’s words in Acts 5:29-30?

  6. How does knowing that God has ultimate authority over all earthly authority give hope, help, and encouragement to you (cf. Dan 2:21, Is 40:23-24, 2 Sam 17:14, 1 Kings 12:15)?

  7. What is one key takeaway from our study in Ecclesiastes 8:1-9 that you will try to remember and apply this week?
